This is usually a fast growing, easy to grow plant. I’ve had a difficult time with this one. (go figure… The cats seem particularly fond of this plant and to mutilating its leaves. )
Like most flowering plants the bird of paradise likes lots of sun, so find a good sunny window for it. It will need at least 4 hours of direct sun and bright indirect sun the rest of the day. It can be placed out doors most of the spring, summer and fall.
Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry, letting water run through and drain out the bottom of the pot.
They prefer day time temperatures of about 70F and night temperatures of about 50F but will tolerate night temps down to freezing occasionally. In Houston I grow them outdoors and they survived our cold spell with temperatures down to 28′ and several evenings in the 30’s.
When the plant is a few of feet tall, or about five years old it will give you a flower that resembles a bird in flight. The plant blooms more when it is pot bound. Once it flowers the first time, it will flower regularly.
Don’t panic when you transplant this one. The roots like like large white snakes, or like tubular bulbs.
